Hammond Manufacturing is a
Canadian success story. The
100-year-old company based
in Guelph, ON, is a global
manufacturer of industrial and
electrical enclosures, racks
and cabinets. It began as a
backyard workshop and today
is a publicly traded company
that employs more than 600
people with multiple locations
in Canada, the US, the UK and
Taiwan.
Its success is due in large
part to the attention to detail
and to the quality of its metal
fabricated parts. And if you
ask Ram Persaud, tool room
lead hand, who has been
with the company for 24 years,
part of that success is due to
its relationship with long time
press brake tooling supplier
Wilson Tool. The company has
supplied Hammond with press
brake tooling and clamping
technology for more than two
decades. Persaud works out of
the company’s main plant in
Guelph, a 17,280 sq m (186,000
sq ft) manufacturing operation.
The company also operates a
second, 10,963 sq m (118, 000
sq ft) plant in Guelph.
The most significant metal
fabricating process at the
facility is bending, using more
than 10 press brakes from
different builders, including
several recent Amada press
brakes. Hammond bends
ferrous and non-ferrous metals,
specializing in aluminum,
stainless steel, and mild steel
ranging in lengths from 102
to 3,048 mm ( 4 to 120 in.) and
in thicknesses from 1.2 to 2.59
mm ( 18 to 10 gauge). While the
company uses other bending
tools, its mainstay bend tooling
is Wilson Tool’s European
Precision style and WT style
tooling with Wilson Tool’s Express
clamping technology.
“Compared to other tooling,
Wilson Tooling is as accurate
as any tooling out there. We
purchase our tooling directly
from Wilson in the US, but we
also do a lot of specialized
folding for different products
that require custom tooling
and Wilson’s Brampton facility is
great for that,” explains Persaud.
That’s because Persaud and his
team work directly with people
at the Brampton plant. “We’ve
known the people there for a
long time as we used Exacta
tooling before Wilson purchased
the company. We use quite a
bit of custom tooling and Wilson
is great to work with on this.”
The WT Precision tooling
is precision manufactured
to a tolerance of +/- 0.1 mm
(+/- .0004 in.) on all critical
dimensions. Lengths of 500
mm ( 19. 69 in.) solid and
